Doggie Issues

I love my dog. How can you not love this face
This is Westley before he got groomed.

doesn't he look like a different dog? Either way, shaggy or groomed, he is a lovey. I just adore this dog. But, he has a trait I can not stand and I really need to fix before he drives me insane. He can go outside and spend an hour or more playing but the second he comes in he pees  usually on my trash can and poops BESIDE the puppy pad. I can not stand this.
This obviously makes traveling with him difficult because he does this at houses we are visiting. Since Greg's family lives about 3 hours away we visiting them for a weekend at a time. I can't leave him alone and with his peeing issue he doesn't get invited to stay at my mom's or even my sister's.

Has anyone ever had a Shih Tzu or any other breed that has done this? What have you done about it?

  1. Your dog is so cute!

When my german shepherd mix was a puppy she would do the same thing. We would be outside with her for 45 minutes sometimes, walking her around, playing with her, etc. and she wouldn't do anything. Then she'd go the second we got back inside.

The second we would catch her peeing in the house we would say no and immediately take her outside and say "pee pee outside". And we brought treats with us outisde so that when she did actually go, we would pet her and praise her like crazy and give her a treat.

I think the key is just to be very consistent - take her outside every time she goes in the house, and reward her every time she goes outside. Eventually it will pay off!

    I hope that helps!

  2. Thanks Niki, I'll try anything at this point. I rewatched Bruch Almighty last night and laughed when the dog would pee on the chair and stop when he took it outside. I felt his pain....although thankfully Westley only goes on the tile.

  3. I wish I could help, but our lab was {fortunately} so easy to train on this. BUT ... that doesn't mean that Westley is not the cutest thing I have ever seen!! EVER.
